Popular Miami Sushi Restaurant Exposed for Unsanitary Practices
It’s really no surprise to hear about restaurant's that engage in sub standard cooking practices. (Local News sometimes exposes them) We’ve seen some of them on Chef Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares and Chef Robert Irvin’s Restaurant Impossible. They go into failing restaurants to identify the problems and work to fix them with a comprehensive plan of improvement. But those restaurants are failing. Sushi Maki in Coral Gables is far from needing help to make big profits. But… Yes, there’s a ‘But”. We have to wonder if booming eating establishments become too relaxed in their sanitary practices and training of employees.
Here is the image caught on camera / caught in the act:
*Notice how one the sides of the lids corners is making full contact with the bottom of the steel landing" Yuk!
Thanks to one of our correspondents / patrons ( John Melton) that this story is possible. He happens to work across the street from the popular Sushi Maki Restaurant (a popular place for first dates) in the heart of Coral Gables – in Miami, Florida located at 2334 Ponce de Leon Blvd 33134 (305) 443-1884. Just 2 days ago, he was walking back to the office when he noticed that one of the Cook’s at Sushi Maki was outside in the Alley, under the staircase mixing and preparing food. This is a problem and it’s pretty disgusting when you think about the elements that encompass an Alley Way. You have roaches, rats, insects, and construction debris. Not to mention, whatever sticks to the bottom of the steel stair case which is directly above the open food container which will soon be served to unsuspecting loyal customers.
We understand a crowded kitchen and the need for space. However, moving in to larger square footage is what the customer’s deserve- not taking exposed food outside to one of the Alleys of America. Not to mention how they boast a very upscale partner list on their website such as: Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, Westin Hotels, Marriot, The Fountainbleau, Barry University, Intercontinental, and St. Regis.
Sushi Maki has branded themselves as one of the better Sushi Eateries in South Florida. You can find locations inside: University of Miami, Florida International University, Whole Foods, and even Miami International Airport. So how do the owners Abe Ng and Iva Ng Hosang (Asia Focus Corp) allow this? Well, we don’t think they notice. Maybe they are only noticing the profits coming in. Not sure, but when we called the Coral Gables location to get an explanation – they simply said that they didn’t understand what we were asking and hung up the phone.
Since sushi is so delicious and Miami is a Mecca for trendy restaurants- Sushi Maki packs them in. So this weekend before you stroll into Sushi Maki for some rolls, make sure you demand your food not to have come from the Alley way preparations and only from within the establishment. Just a health tip for our friends and readers…
Feel free to contact the company and tell the owners that they have to do better!
